I've added a couple more stops to the itinerary below thanks to feedback from some of you (thanks, Shirley and Kristen!). Please keep your suggestions coming for visits and sightseeing.
I also have promised to try to make connections with other travelers if possible: Ellen while she's visiting in Indiana, and Jamie while she's on a coast-to-coast bike ride to benefit Books to Prisons (her courage puts me and my comfy Prius to shame).
