Today started off cloudy, but by noon the blue sky was back and we headed out on a 4 1/2-hour, 48-km (30-mile) bike ride. Dawn and Konia, frequent bike tourers in Europe and elsewhere, are preparing for a ride in August from Copenhagen to Berlin. The day was brisk, about 60°F (16°C) - perfect for a moderately hilly ride.

We kept getting gorgeous glimpses of water and islands to our east as we headed north on the Saanich Peninsula; after one long climb I was only too happy to ask for a pause to take photos. Finally we descended to the shore of Haro Strait just south of Sidney and headed back south on the Lochside bike trail. Now we had many views like this of the strait, two of the Canadian Sound Islands in the middle distance and the U.S. San Juan Islands farther off.

Along the way we stopped at a farm stand where Dawn bought some beautiful rhubarb, Michell Air Park to watch the Victoria Radio Control Modelers Society expertly fly their model airplanes, and a trailside refreshment area where Dawn and Konia treated me to a rest and an all-fruit popsicle. Michell Air Park is a small field just for model RC aircraft. The man in this photo had just gotten his model biplane's engine running and was revving it as he restrained the plane with his ankles. He then taxied the plane to the grass runway, got it airborne and put it through spectacular aerobatics while the previous plane's owner brought it in for a perfect landing.

On the way back home we detoured through downtown Victoria so I could buy a road map. This photo shows the harbor where the Coho delivered me yesterday, along with the swarms of watercraft we see everywhere and a couple of two-masted schooners that are frequent visitors to the harbor.
Occasionally strong headwinds made even flat sections of the trail feel like climbing a hill, but more often the breeze cooled us.
Tomorrow morning I head to Vancouver on the mainland for two days, and then to Seattle. This has been a perfect couple of days.
