Day 2: Bittersweet

I started and ended my last trip with photos of Penny the Prius at home, so here she is yesterday at 6:50 a.m. all loaded and ready to go - no snow this time! "Lightly loaded" means my suitcase, a computer, a tote bag with stuff for inside the car, a pair of boots, and all the maps of states along my route that I could put my hands on when I thought of it at the last minute.

At 4 p.m. I was in Cambridge, MA, enjoying cool, clear air, a pleasant relief from the hot muggy stuff that arrived in DC two days ago. Three hours later I was at a party my mother-in-law Ann's university colleagues threw to celebrate her impending retirement. Great food, open bar, brief speeches, a sing-along to text written by a very witty colleague of hers, all in the company of a half-dozen dear family members and about a hundred strangers talking shop - however that may sound it's the recipe for a rollicking good time.

This morning, after enjoying the hospitality of Ann's neighbors Lucy and Rick, I drove the two hours to mid-Cape Cod to join Ann. We spent much of a quiet day doing yard work at the Small House and a short hike in nearby woods. Those of you who have visited the Bay House may be interested in this view of the bay from roughly the spot where Rachel spent her last few weeks and many other visits since her childhood. The new owners have cleared out the heavy undergrowth, including invasive bittersweet that blocked much of the view. As you can see, they have also cleared out the house - it's now just a big hole in the sand, soon to be filled with a new house.
